Pintor Varela Street

Ciriaco Parraga more known as Pintor Varela it was born in Torrelavega in 1902 and expired in Torrelavaga in 1973. It belonged in the epoch of the 20th century. It began his preparation in the School of Arts and of Trades of Torrelavega, where it began an artistic path inside the so called Basque School.

In Madrid he studies in the Academy of Fernando Sain's Fine arts, visits the Prado Museum and is present at the informal artistic and literary meetings. Little fixes later Bilbao, completing his formation in the School of Arts and the Trades of the city and in Federico Sáenz's workshop. In 1930 he travels in Paris, where it enters in touch with the impressionistic art, which will exercise certain influence on his later work. He acquires a reputation as a portrayer.

Párraga was an excellent draftsman, and obtained the Third Medal in the National Exhibition of Fine arts of Madrid. His portraits, clearly realistic, denote a considerable interest to catch the soul of the personage, in examples as ¨Don Resurrección Maria's Portrait of Azkue¨ done in 1950. There is a street in honoring to him in Torrelavega.
